Indoor residual spraying

Indoor residual spraying activities began in 2001 and are now conducted in 15 districts: Kabwe (Central Province); Chililabombwe, Chingola, Kalulushi, Kitwe, Luanshya, Mufurila, Ndola (Copperbelt Province); Chongwe, Kafue, Lusaka (Lusaka Province); Solwezi (North-Western Province); Kazungula, Livingstone, and Mazabuka (Southern Province). The spray districts for the 2007-2008 spray season are shown in the figure below. IRS is targeted toward urban and peri-urban areas within these districts, accounting for nearly 700,000 households.

Spray activities are coordinated by districts and are conducted annually prior to the malaria transmission season, usually from October to December.

According to the National Malaria Strategic Plan 2006-2011, Zambia is working towards achieving high coverage (80%) of IRS among eligible households in targeted spray areas.
